Marion Popenoe Hatch has a B.A. in Anthropology and a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Berkeley, California. She is one of the most recognized archaeologists in Guatemala not only for her great contribution to the knowledge of the ancient populations of the Guatemalan territory, but also for being a pioneer in the formation of many Guatemalan students who have dedicated themselves to this particular study.
The contributions of Dr. Hatch to Guatemalan archaeology have been fundamental in the Central Highlands and the South Coast. Currently there is no better reference in terms of the study of ancient populations that inhabited those regions, especially related to their ceramic evidence. In the Pacific region, she has worked in the following sites: Monte Alto, La Blanca, El Bálsamo, Salinas Tilapa, Marinalá, El Baúl and Tak’alik Ab’aj, where she worked as a ceramist since 1988.
Author of articles published in Guatemalan archaeological journals and book chapters published in Guatemala and the United States. Winner of 13 recognitions to research work on Guatemalan archaeology: two granted by the University of California at Berkeley and 11 granted in Guatemala by different academic institutions. She is currently the director of the Department of Archaeology at Universidad del Valle in Guatemala City.
